When it comes to sturdy, great-looking greenhouses which can withstand tough UK winters, Rion’s products stand out. All of their glasshouses are built with PVC resin (instead of aluminum) for extra strength, and feature distinctive dutch-barn roofs. The Rion Hobby Gardener line of greenhouses features four terrific structures built for the toughest of conditions.
Here’s what to expect from the Rion Hobby Gardener greenhouse.
Size and Detailing: All of the Hobby Gardeners are eight feet in length, and there are four sizes from which to choose: 8 x 8 for your yard or allotment, 8 x 12 for a bigger plot, a very large 8 x 16, and a whopping 8 x 20 greenhouse which will make your neighbours wonder if you’ve taken up commercial growing. The two smaller models each have one roof vent, while the 8 x 16 structure has three vents and the 8 x 20 model has four. There are latching and lockable (top and bottom) double doors with aluminum hinges on all of these greenhouses. The barn-shaped roof is not only dramatic and attractive, but also provides maximum room for plants placed in the middle of the structure to grow tall and straight.
Frame and Base: There is only one frame option for the Hobby Gardener, but it’s a good one. The green PVC resin is thick and UV-protected, adding an extra level of strength and insulation over greenhouses built with aluminum – because the resin doesn’t bend under pressure (nor does it suffer any discolouration). During testing, these structures have stood strong under snow weighing 15 kg per square metre, and in 65 miles per hour winds. One other big advantage to the Rion resin frames: they’re equipped with a pin and lock connector system which makes your greenhouse fast and simple to assemble, without any tools. A PVC resin base, giving the greenhouse extra stability and height, is optional.
Glazing: Hobby Gardener greenhouses come standard with polycarbonate glazing. 6mm twin wall glazing is used for the side panels of the structure, and 4mm polycarbonate twin wall glazing is standard for roof panels. This construction is optimal for safety (since it’s unbreakable), insulation, and UV protection for your plants. Horticultural or toughened glass are not offered as substitutes.
Options: There are two extremely valuable options (in addition to the base) available for these Rion greenhouses. One is an automatic vent opener, which will determine when the structure is too hot and needs to be ventilated – and then closes the vent when appropriate. The other is a Rion ten-blade louvre vent, which replaces one of the side panels for additional air circulation. Several work benches, staging options and other greenhouse accessories are also available.
Hobby Gardner greenhouses don’t come with the same flexibility as many competitors; you can’t choose different colours or glazings, or add extra vents to the roof. If you want a silver structure, or one with glass, you’re out of luck. But they’re beautiful, strong, functional and designed to handle our sometimes-difficult winters, and available to fit almost any size of garden.
